Decades of Outdoor Leadership

1982. The Start.

Survival Training School of California was originally founded in 1982 by former US Army Combat Engineer Richard “Lone Wolf” Legan. The school quickly found favor with local military units, and RIchard performed several courses for the Army he formerly served in.

Richard specialized in “Native American living skills”, and focused heavily on the traditional uses of local wildlife and resources.

2008. The Next Generation.

After training with Richard for over a decade, Thomas Coyne was given permission to use the STSC name. Richard served as a consultant during this period assisting Thomas, and even taught a few of the earliest courses.

As a former Firefighter EMT Thomas decided to focus on emergency skills, and training the student to act as their own first responder in remote areas. Thomas used a blend of technical rescue training, emergency medical training, and Native American living skills to form this performance based curriculum.

2017. TCSS Forms.

In 2017 Thomas re-branded the company and greatly expanded the course catalog. Urban disaster training, emergency medical courses, and even some self-defense/tactical offerings were added; all in response to client demand.

Our name was also regularly being copied as closely as “legally” possible on the internet and in advertisements, which led to consumer confusion. We’ve had many individuals contact us after thinking they signed up here, only to find out they wound up on a competitor’s site. With our new name, this is easily avoided.
